DEC staff banding and releasing migratory birds at our Avian Productivity Research Station. Banding allows biologists to learn a lot about bird population dynamics and migratory patterns and also allows us to monitor the status and trends of bird populations over time. You won’t want to miss some great slow-motion shots of birds being released! #WildlifeWednesday For more info: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/271.html | NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

You asked, we answered! 💬 (Part 2) In this week’s #FeatherFriday, we’re tackling some of your most-asked questions about bird banding. From how it works to why we do it, we’re covering it all, one question at a time. In this video, we answer: 💡What happens if a bird is injured or sick? 💡Are there any birds that tend to be more challenging or easy to handle? 💡How often do you get bit? 💡What is the oldest bird that has been through the bird research station? 💡Do you ever band hummingbirds?

Our Spring bird banding stations open up later this month. To get us excited let's take a look back at some of our highlights from our banding stations last year! Across all of our banding projects our staff and volunteers banded 6,400 birds of 128 species. We also banded four hybrids! The hybrids were a Black-capped x Mountain Chickadee, a Bullock's x Baltimore Oriole, a Spotted x Eastern Towhee and a Yellow-rumped x Townsend's Warbler! Stay tuned as we dig into this data and get you more highl

Several times a year, Lab biologists set up bird banding stations to track our feathered friends. 🐦 They record data like the birds’ species, age, weight and overall body condition to make sure we’re being good stewards of our environment and complying with the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. “By analyzing the data,” says wildlife biologist Audrey Sanchez, “we can identify trends in bird populations over time and determine the cause of any population shifts.” Our scientists work to ensure th

Join our non-game biologists as they band songbirds at Spring Meadow Lake State Park! This banding station is part of a continent-wide program called MAPS, which stands for Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship. Scientists catch birds in fine nets called mist nets, allowing them to collect a large amount of data that would not be possible to gather from a distance. Data that, when compared over time and to other MAPS stations, can help them answer questions like: What factors might driv

Ever wondered what bird banding looks like? 🐦 In this clip, our trained bander walks you through the careful process with a beautiful Fox Sparrow at the McGill Bird Observatory. Each step—from identifying the species and applying a uniquely numbered aluminum band, to checking feather molt and fat reserves—helps us track bird movements and monitor population health over time. These data are vital for conservation and understanding long-term changes in migratory patterns. 🧪 All handling is done
