Gyro error is the difference between a true bearing and the bearing shown by a gyrocompass. To calculate it, compare the gyro bearing to a known true bearing (e.g., from leading lights or a landmarks). The error is calculated by subtracting the gyro bearing from the true bearing. The error is "west" if the gyro bearing is greater and "east" if it is less.
